In 258 AD, amid Emperor Valerian's brutal anti-Christian persecutions, Pope Sixtus II entrusted the treasures of the Church—including the legendary Last Supper chalice—to his archdeacon, Saint Lawrence. Knowing his own arrest was imminent, Lawrence secretly gave the sacred cup to a soldier to smuggle out of Rome to his family's home in Huesca, Spain. Shortly after, Lawrence was famously martyred by being roasted alive on a gridiron for refusing to surrender the Church's remaining wealth to Roman officials. The smuggled relic survived centuries of hiding in mountain monasteries and is venerated today at the Cathedral of Valencia as the authentic Holy Chalice of Valencia.
